SOYA Yoga Teacher Training 500 Hour Distance Program


The SOYA 500 hour Distance Education Course is completed through the SOYA Yoga Teacher Training Penticton Headquarters. This program covers the same curriculum as the RYT500® Extended Program. However, this program is designed for those of you who are unable to attend monthly Teacher Training meetings at one of our locations.  Our Distance Education training is recognized by YogaBC and the International Yoga Teachers' Association (IYTA).  It is currently under review for Registry with Yoga Alliance.

Distance Education training requires you to have high-speed internet access and SKYPE (which is a free download at www.skype.com) in order to participate in regular discussions to review your written lessons.

Completing the SOYA Teacher Training by in this fashion requires your regular attendance in Hatha Yoga instruction with soya facultyIndependent SOYA Faculty. You will also be required to be present for a written and practical exam.

The SOYA 500 Hour Distance Education Program extends over 1 to 2 years, depending on your time and pace with the lessons. You will complete written assignments covering:

  • The Hatha Yoga Pradipika
  • The Upanishads
  • The Bhagavad Gita
  • The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
  • The Chakras, Kriyas, Koshas and Mudras
  • Meditation, Pranayama, and Professionalism
  • Sanskrit and Kirtan
  • Creating Lesson Plans
  • Specialized Yoga Project

These will give you a thorough understanding of the main paths of yoga; Hatha, Raja, Jnana, Bhakti and Karma yoga.

In addition to these assignments above, you will attend Hatha Yoga classes or workshops with one of our soya facultyIndependent SOYA Faculty. (286 hours, or the equivalent of approximately 4 classes per week over 2 years). You can enjoy many different styles of Hatha Yoga in this manner. Because of the variety of possible classes and workshops you can take with these Teachers, you will pay for these classes directly to the source of instruction.

To deepen your understanding of yoga and its benefits, one of your assignments will be to complete a Specialized Yoga Research Project in a preapproved topic of your choice, such as Yoga for Children, Pregnancy, Athletes, Arthritis, Scoliosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Seniors, etc. This project will be your final "thesis". Research includes understanding the Anatomy and Physiology related to your project, how to teach this specialized group, and organized study with Primary Faculty or Independent SOYA Faculty members who have the skills related to your project. Upon completion of the RYT500® Hour Extended Program there is a written and practical exam

Additional Requirements:
If you have not already taken a course in Anatomy and Physiology you will need one. A great course can be found at www.ed2go.com for approximately $150. This will cover the systems of the body in six weeks.
You will need current certification in Emergency First Aid and CPR.

Program Cost $2250.00 Payable in 6 postdated cheques for January, May, and September of each year, starting with the month you begin the program. First payment for $750.00 and 5 additional payments each for $300.00.

Program fees include books, Teacher Training Manual, SOYA Teacher Directory listing, Practical and Written Exams, and GST.

Program fees do not include additional hours of Hatha Yoga instruction with Primary Faculty or soya faculty Independent SOYA Faculty (approx 4 classes per week), Anatomy & Physiology, First Aid and CPR. These costs are additional and paid by you directly to the source of instruction.
